Remote care: a bonus for telecare

One of the questions that led us to initiate a project like Kwido was the importance, in our view, of maintaining direct contact between people. This becomes even more relevant in the case of elderly care, the responsibility of which often falls upon the family. However, more than just basic care, it also concerns affective and socialization needs.

Unfortunately, relatives don’t always live geographically close by, which does not by any means reflect a sentimental distance. In our case, this was the reality for two members of Ideable Solutions, which is why the company began to devise a system that would allow them to send personal photographs and hold video calls, to give just two examples, in a simple way, adapted to the needs of the elderly. Being able to see their grandchildren more often and even speak to them face-to-face from a distance were about to become a reality.

The platform’s development has been astounding, yet the basic characteristics that originally inspired the concept remain a fundamental part of  Kwido. Thanks to the collaboration of users, relatives and carers, Kwido has made great progress, allowing it to meet three fundamental objectives: 

  1. Promote the elderly person’s independence.
  2. Facilitate and assist the work of health and elderly care professionals.
  3. Allow direct contact and the continuous flow of information between relatives.

Among these three objectives, video calls plays a key role. What is more, they provide an extra feature to the telecare system, allowing the provision of personal and remote care to citizens who would otherwise go unattended or, at best, receive care at a high cost. This is the case of rural communities and isolated homes, where being able to find a solution from a distance would avoid a doctor having to travel to see the patient in person whenever there is an alert.

Having the video call option integrated into the telecare system offers an important advantage when it comes to contacting the elderly person because it allows the healthcare professional to visually evaluate the state of the patient. On the other hand, it helps the user to follow orders from the doctor or carer who, in turn, ensures that the communication is effective. Moreover, in the case of hearing loss or diminished hearing capacity, being able to establish effective visual communication is clearly an important advantage.

Face-to-face interaction eliminates logistical problems and keeps visits to a minimum, increasing work efficiency and diminishing care costs without compromising the quality of service provided. Without a doubt, this is the future of healthcare.
